I often hear, ‘oh, I have lost my photography mojo.’ And yes, and times I get that. Then, when running another workshop one participant asked if I would run a workshop at the Smithfield Meat Market in London as it is now marked for closure. Of course, I said yes, not realising it did not even open until midnight. But then excitement took over. The idea of running something quite unique and in doing so, capturing history as it unfolds or changes.

Smithfield Market is the largest wholesale meat market in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. Located within the Square Mile of the City of London t is a place stuffed with 800 years of history.

Just a few hundred yards from Barbican Underground (don’t forget check the tube times) it is also close to the Barbican Estate, Hatton Gardens and other opportunities to photograph this part of London rarely seen at night. (For the Instagrammers amongst you, just think of the opportunities.) And so, this workshop is born.

This is a unique opportunity and is suitable for those with any level of experience or none and is a perfectly accessible workshop for those using camera phones or any form of camera.

• Using ‘street style’ techniques to capture local workers, visitors and staff in candid moments.
• Using higher ISO’s and wider apertures to compensate when light drops as Tripods inside would not be accepted.
• Looking at how white balance can be used to give feel to the image.
• Explore the potential for story telling in our images.
• Finding good composition in what could be a busy environment.

As time allows, we can explore the local area, looking for the shots others miss, seeking sources of light to be used in creative shots and importantly, as a small group there will no need to worry about safety of being alone.
